What is embalming?

Embalming (also known as thanatopraxis) is the preservative treatment of a deceased person using chemical solutions — typically formaldehyde-based. Its purpose is to slow the natural decomposition process and preserve the body for transport or viewing.

For international repatriations, embalming is required by law in the vast majority of cases. IATA (International Air Transport Association) requires it for air transport, and almost all receiving countries require embalming to WHO standards.

How does an embalming proceed?

Embalming is carried out by a trained thanatopractor and usually takes 2 to 4 hours. The process:

1. Preparation

The deceased is washed and disinfected. Clothing and jewellery are removed. External cleansing is the first step.

2. Arterial injection

A preserving solution (formaldehyde mixture) is injected into the vascular system via the carotid artery. Simultaneously, the blood is drained.

3. Cavity treatment

The abdominal cavity is treated with a trocar — fluids are aspirated and replaced with preserving solution.

4. Completion

The body is washed, dressed and cosmetically prepared. An embalming certificate is issued.

How much does embalming cost?

The cost of embalming in Germany ranges from 400 to 800 euros. In some countries (e.g. the USA, Australia) costs may be higher. Price differences depend on:

Type Cost
Standard embalming (Germany)400–600 €
Extended embalming (post-mortem cases)600–800 €
Islamic embalming (Tahnit)400–700 €
Embalming abroad200–1.000 €

With our all-inclusive packages, embalming is always included in the price.

When is embalming required?

Embalming is required by law in the following cases:

Air transport (IATA)

IATA mandates embalming for the transport of deceased persons by air. Without an embalming certificate, no coffin will be accepted on board.

International repatriation

Almost all countries require embalming for the entry of a deceased person. Within the EU, exceptions exist for short overland transports.

Long transport duration

For repatriations lasting more than 24 to 48 hours, embalming is essential for hygiene reasons — even if not legally required.

Viewing

If an open-casket viewing is planned (common in some cultures), cosmetic embalming is recommended.

WHO standard and certification

The WHO standard (World Health Organisation) defines the minimum requirements for embalming for international transport. The embalming certificate confirms that the treatment was carried out in accordance with these standards. Without this certificate, international repatriation is not possible.

At Ritual Service24 we work exclusively with certified thanatopractors who operate to WHO standards. The certificate is required together with the mortuary pass for transport.

Embalming and religious requirements

In Islam, standard embalming is generally not permitted, as the body of the deceased should be protected. For international repatriations, however, there is Tahnit embalming — an Islamically compliant procedure without animal products, recognised by Islamic scholars as permissible when necessary for transport.

In Orthodox Judaism and some Christian denominations there are also reservations. We accommodate all religious requirements and offer appropriate procedures. Find out more in our guide to Islamic funerals in Germany.
